XDocs vs BoldSign
BoldSign is good value at the thing it does: finished documents out, signatures back, with templates, bulk send and an API that does not cost a fortune. Teams look past it when signing turns out to be the smallest part of the job — when the agreement is drafted and redlined first, or shared with investors before it is signed. XDocs covers those parts too, and can bring a BoldSign account's history across when you move.
BoldSign An e-signature service from Syncfusion with a free tier, templates, bulk send and a developer API with embedded signing, priced well below the best-known names.
| Capability | XDocs | BoldSign |
|---|---|---|
| Draft and edit the agreement itself | A collaborative editor with suggesting mode, version history and templates with signature blocks wired in. | Signing starts from a file prepared elsewhere. |
| Legally binding e-signatures | ESIGN and UETA, frozen snapshot at send, certificate with SHA-256 digests. No eIDAS advanced or qualified signatures yet. | Says it meets ESIGN and eIDAS; check which eIDAS signature level a plan provides if you need advanced or qualified. |
| Templates, routing and bulk send | Templates, sequential or parallel routing, reminders, expiry, reassign and void, and bulk send from a sheet. | Templates, signing order, reminders and bulk send; check which plan includes each. |
| Developer API and embedded signing | A REST API, webhooks, CLI, Zapier and an MCP server on every plan; signers sign on an XDocs page, not embedded in your app. | A developer API with embedded signing, priced separately from the app plans. |
| Tracked share links with gates | Password, verification, allow lists, NDA gate, watermark, expiry and view caps on every link. | Not offered; documents are sent to be signed. |
| Virtual data rooms | Folder permissions per viewer group, watermarks per reader, a Q&A inbox, from the free plan up. | Not offered. |
| Bringing your BoldSign history across | An importer takes a BoldSign export: every signed PDF and audit trail kept exactly as BoldSign issued it, filed by status, plus a spreadsheet of each document's signers and activity and the raw backup stored untouched. | Signed documents and audit trails can be downloaded from the app. |
| Free plan | 5 sends a month with the editor, links, a data room and the assistant. | A free plan for one sender with a monthly envelope allowance; check the current numbers. |
| Pricing model | Per workspace: $29 a month for Pro, $99 for Business, any number of people. | Low-cost plans by user or team size, with the API priced on its own. |
| Self-hosting | Docker and Postgres, unmetered. | Cloud only. |

Choose BoldSign when
- Signing finished documents is all you need, and you want it at the lowest price.
- You are embedding signing in your own product and want an inexpensive embedded signing API.
- You need the eIDAS options BoldSign offers; XDocs does not offer eIDAS advanced or qualified signatures yet.
Choose XDocs when
- The agreement is drafted and negotiated before it is signed, and exporting to sign is the step you want to lose.
- You share decks or run diligence and need tracked links or a data room alongside signing.
- You want an assistant that reads the real documents and envelopes and acts only after you approve.
Questions people ask when switching
- Can I move my BoldSign documents into XDocs?
- Yes. Export your account from the BoldSign app and we import it into your workspace: each signed PDF and audit trail exactly as BoldSign issued it, under a BoldSign folder with a subfolder per status, a "BoldSign history" spreadsheet listing every document's signers, sends, views, reminders and expiries with a link to its PDF, and the raw backup zip stored untouched. The import is run for you today rather than from a button, so ask through the contact page; it can be run again and skips what already arrived.
- Do signed BoldSign documents stay valid after I move?
- Yes. A signature's validity rests on the signed PDF and its audit trail, and both are imported byte for byte as BoldSign issued them. Nothing is re-signed.
- Is XDocs as cheap as BoldSign?
- For one person who only signs, BoldSign may well cost less. XDocs is priced per workspace — free for 5 sends a month, Pro $29 and Business $99 a month for the whole team — so it gets cheaper as more people need to read, edit or sign.
