Free tool
Sign a PDF online, free
Draw or type your signature, place it on the page, add the date, and download the signed PDF. No account, no watermark, and the file never leaves your browser.
Nothing is uploaded. Your PDF is opened and signed on this device, by code running in this page. XDocs never receives it.
What this does: it puts an image of your signature, and any date or text you add, onto the PDF. That is how most people sign a form they will email back. It is not an electronic signature with an audit trail, so it does not prove who signed or when. XDocs does that part.
How to sign a PDF online
Four steps, in the browser you are reading this in.
1
Open your PDF
Drop it on the box above or choose it from your files. It opens in this browser tab; nothing is sent to a server.
2
Create your signature
Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger, or type your name and pick a handwriting style.
3
Place it on the page
Choose Signature, then tap where it goes. Drag it into position and pull the corner to size it. Add today's date or a line of text the same way.
4
Download the signed PDF
Your signature, date and text are written into the PDF itself, at the spot you placed them, and the file downloads to your device.
Need the other side to sign, with a legally binding audit trail?
Send it with XDocs. They sign in their browser without an account; every view and signature is recorded, and everyone receives the signed PDF with a certificate of completion. Free for 5 sends a month, no card.
Send a PDF for signature freeQuestions about signing a PDF
- Is it really free, and do I need an account?
- Yes, and no. The tool is free with no account, no email address and no watermark, and there is no limit on how many PDFs you sign.
- Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
- No. The PDF is opened, shown and signed by code running in your browser. It is never sent to XDocs or anyone else.
- Is a signature added this way legally binding?
- It adds a picture of your signature to the PDF, which is how many people sign a document they then email back, and it is often accepted. It is not a full electronic signature: there is no record of who signed, when, from where, or proof that the file was not changed afterwards. For an agreement that may have to stand up later, send it for signature with XDocs, which records an audit trail and attaches a certificate of completion.
- Can I sign on my phone?
- Yes. The tool works at phone width: draw your signature with your finger, tap the page to place it and drag it into position.
- Can I add the date or other text?
- Yes. Choose Date to place today's date, which you can edit, or Text to type a name, title or anything else onto the page.
- How do I get somebody else to sign the PDF?
- Send it with XDocs. The other side signs in their browser without an account, every step is recorded in an audit trail, and everyone gets the signed PDF with a certificate of completion. The free plan includes 5 sends a month.
- What PDFs will not work?
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be changed until the password is removed in your PDF reader. Most other PDFs work, including scanned documents and rotated pages.
Write it, send it, and know it was signed.
