Fill out a PDF form online, free

Type into a PDF’s form fields, or add text, dates and checkmarks anywhere on the page, then download it. No account, no watermark, and the file never leaves your browser.

Nothing is uploaded. Your PDF is opened and filled in on this device, by code running in this page. XDocs never receives it.

How to fill out a PDF online

Four steps, in the browser you are reading this in.

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Drop it on the box above or choose it from your files. It opens in this browser tab; nothing is sent to a server.

  2. 2

    Fill in the fields

If the PDF is a fillable form, its fields are highlighted: type into them, tick the boxes and pick from the lists.

  3. 3

    Add anything else

For a form that is not fillable, choose Text, Date or Checkmark and tap where it goes. Drag it into place and pull the corner to size it. Sign it too, if it asks.

  4. 4

    Download the filled PDF

Your answers are written into the PDF itself, and the file downloads to your device. Lock the answers in first if nobody should change them.

Sending forms out to be filled and signed?

With XDocs you place the fields once, send the form, and each person fills and signs it in their browser without an account, with every step recorded in an audit trail. Free for 5 sends a month, no card.

Questions about filling in a PDF

Is it really free, and do I need an account?
Yes, and no. Filling in a PDF is free with no account, no email address and no watermark, and there is no limit on how many you fill.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened, filled in and saved by code running in your browser. It is never sent to XDocs or anyone else, which matters for forms full of personal details.
What if my PDF has no fillable fields?
Most scanned and printed-to-PDF forms do not. Choose Text, Date or Checkmark, tap the blank you want to fill, and drag the text onto the line. It is written onto the page exactly where you put it.
Can I still edit the form after I download it?
Yes: answers typed into a fillable form stay in its fields, so you or anyone else can change them in a PDF reader. Tick “Lock the answers in” before downloading to flatten the form so they can no longer be edited.
Can I sign the form as well?
Yes. Choose Sign, draw or type your signature, and tap where it goes. For a signature with proof of who signed and when, send the form for signature with XDocs, which records an audit trail.
Why can I not type some characters into a field?
A PDF form sets its answers in a basic font that covers Western European languages. For names in other scripts, use the Text tool, which places the text on the page exactly as you type it.
What PDFs will not work?
Password-protected PDFs cannot be changed until the password is removed. Forms made only for Adobe's own apps (XFA forms) cannot be filled as forms, but you can still type onto the page with Text, Date and Checkmark.
