Compare two versions of a document, free

Paste two versions of a contract, or open them as Word or text files, and see every word that was deleted or inserted. No account, and neither version leaves your browser.

Nothing is uploaded. Both versions are compared on this device, by code running in this page. XDocs never receives them.

The version you sent, or the earlier draft.
The version that came back, or the later draft.

How to compare two documents

Four steps, in the browser you are reading this in.

  1. 1

    Add the original

Paste its text into the left box, or open a Word .docx or a .txt file. It is read in this browser tab; nothing is sent to a server.

  2. 2

    Add the revised version

Do the same on the right with the version that came back, or the later draft.

  3. 3

    Compare

Every paragraph is matched with its counterpart, and inside an edited paragraph each changed word is marked.

  4. 4

    Read the redline

Deleted words are struck through in red and inserted words underlined in green. Show only changes to skip what stayed the same.

Redlining contracts back and forth?

XDocs is where the contract is drafted, redlined and signed: suggesting mode and version history in the document, a counterparty's Word redline merged back in as tracked suggestions, and each returned change triaged as cosmetic, material or dangerous. Free to start, no card.

Questions about comparing documents

Is it really free, and do I need an account?
Yes, and no. Comparing documents is free with no account and no email address, and there is no limit on how many comparisons you run.
Is my contract uploaded anywhere?
No. Both versions are read and compared by code running in your browser. Neither is sent to XDocs or anyone else, which is the point for a draft that is still confidential.
Which files can I open?
Word .docx files and plain text (.txt or .md). For a PDF, an old .doc or a Pages file, copy the text and paste it in. Word files are read for their text, so formatting changes such as bold or a new font are not shown.
How is the comparison done?
Paragraph by paragraph, then word by word. Paragraphs are matched in order; where one was edited rather than replaced, the words that changed are marked inside it, so a moved date or a new number stands out instead of the whole clause turning red.
Does it show tracked changes in a Word file?
It reads the Word file as it currently reads, with tracked changes accepted. To see what a counterparty changed, compare the version you sent with the one they sent back.
Is this the same as a lawyer's redline?
It shows the same thing: what was taken out and what was put in. It does not judge whether a change matters. XDocs does that part, flagging each returned change as cosmetic, material or dangerous against your playbook.
Is there a size limit?
A few thousand paragraphs, which covers a long agreement with its schedules. A very large document is best compared a section at a time.

Draft it, negotiate it, and get it signed.
