Alternatives
Free DocuSign alternatives, chosen by what you actually need
A free DocuSign account lets you sign what other people send you; sending your own generally needs a paid plan or a trial. Most tools that advertise a free alternative are free in a narrower sense than the headline suggests: a handful of requests a month, one sender, no templates, or a trial with a clock on it. This page says what each one gives you without paying, as of the date below, so you can pick the one whose limits you will not hit.
What to weigh before you compare prices
1
Sends, not signatures
Signing a document someone sent you is free almost everywhere. The number that matters is how many documents you can send for signature each month before you have to pay.
2
Free for good, or free for now
A trial ends; a free plan does not. Check whether the free tier lasts, and whether it keeps the documents you signed on it if you never upgrade.
3
What the free tier leaves out
Templates, more than one sender, reminders, branding and the audit certificate are where free tiers are usually trimmed. Check the one you will need in month two.
4
Hosting it yourself
Open-source tools are free to run on your own server, which moves the cost from a subscription to the time it takes to operate, back up and update it.
5
The record afterwards
Free or not, insist on a frozen snapshot at send, recorded consent, an audit trail and a verifiable digest. A signature without them is worth less in a dispute.
6 alternatives to DocuSign
Described by what each is best at, as of 27 October 2026. The first is ours.
1. XDocs
Best for: Teams that also write, negotiate and share the agreement, and want a free plan that lasts
Free for good: 5 signature sends a month, the collaborative editor, templates with signature blocks, 50 tracked links, one data room and the assistant, with a certificate of completion and audit trail on every envelope. No card to start. It can also be self-hosted in Docker, unmetered. When you outgrow it, Pro is $29 and Business $99 a month for the whole workspace.
2. PandaDoc
Best for: Occasional signing of uploaded documents
A free eSign plan that sends uploaded documents for signature with a limited yearly or monthly allowance; the document builder, templates and CRM features are on paid plans. Check its pricing page for the current limit.
3. Dropbox Sign
Best for: A few signature requests a month from a polished tool
Formerly HelloSign. Its free plan covers a few signature requests a month and signing your own documents; templates and more requests are paid.
4. BoldSign
Best for: One sender who needs a more generous free allowance
A free plan for a single sender with a monthly envelope allowance that is larger than most, plus templates. Teams, branding and higher volumes are on paid plans.
5. Adobe Acrobat Sign
Best for: Signing a PDF you already have open in Acrobat
A free Acrobat account can fill and sign PDFs and send a small number of signature requests; regular sending is on a paid Acrobat or Acrobat Sign plan. Check Adobe's current allowance.
6. DocuSeal and Documenso
Best for: Developers happy to host and maintain a server
Open-source e-signature tools that are free to self-host. Both also sell hosted plans; some features of the self-hosted editions may need a paid licence, so check each project's licence and pricing pages.
Questions people ask first
- Is there a completely free DocuSign alternative?
- For low volume, yes. XDocs is free for 5 sends a month with no time limit, and several signing tools have small free plans. For unlimited free sending you would self-host an open-source tool, which costs the time to run it.
- Are signatures on a free plan legally binding?
- Yes, if the tool records intent, consent, association of the signature with the record and keeps it. That does not depend on the plan. Download the certificate of completion and check it carries an audit trail.
- Can I use DocuSign for free?
- A free DocuSign account signs documents other people send you. Sending your own needs a paid plan or a trial; check DocuSign's pricing page for the current terms.
- What happens to my documents if I stop using a free plan?
- Download the signed PDFs and certificates before you leave; they stay valid wherever they are kept.
